EPA doesn't publish a dollar figure. It says most homes can be fixed for about the same cost as other common home repairs, and that the cost depends on the size and design of your home and which methods are needed (EPA).
What drives the price
- Foundation type. A single basement or slab is simplest. Crawlspaces need a sealed membrane, and homes with a basement plus a crawlspace or an addition may need more than one suction point.
- What's under the slab. EPA notes sub-slab suction works best when air moves easily beneath the slab. Tighter soil can mean more suction points.
- Pipe and fan route: an interior route to the attic versus an exterior route up the wall.
- Sump pits and drain tile, which can serve as suction points but need an airtight cover.
- Your starting level. Very high readings may need a stronger fan or extra suction points.
- Sealing, electrical work and permits. EPA says to ask for the total price including taxes and permit fees.
Running costs after installation
- Electricity: about $100 a year on average for the fan, per IEMA-OHS. Fans run continuously.
- Fan replacement: EPA notes fans may last five years or more and may then need repair or replacement.
- Retesting: EPA recommends retesting at least every two years.
